Emigrated from Punnetts Town, Heathfield, Sussex, England, in 1842. Came to Rochester, NY via Erie Canal. Said to have built in Rochester the original Lake Avenue Baptist Chapel, Good Shepherd Church (branch of St. Luke's on Grape Street, Episcopalian), the Driving Park Race Track, the original State Street car barns. In Canaltown, he is said to have built the stone building of Whitney Elevator on Brown and Warehouse (now a warehouse). [This in in question since the building is thought to have been built in 1928. Perhaps he built an extension.] On the Genesee River just below the Lower Falls, he is said to have built a hotel that had a stone tower which enclosed an elevator that brought people to the top of the gorge. Represented the 11th Ward in the Board of Supervisors. Life-long member of Odd Fellows (Genesee Lodge). Described in obit: "He was a progressive thinker, and his strict adherence to the principles of right was among his chief characteristices." In article about Reuben A, he was described in the D&C, 7/26/1914, as "one of the pioneer building contractors of Rochester."

Lived at 30 Magne Street for 56 yrs, was oldest surviving settler of that part of Rochester. Had a woman named Louisa Clark living with her to do the housework and cooking, run errands, write her letters. When Louisa died June 6, 1900, of heart failure caused by pneumonia, she was was buried in the Punnett burial plot. Rev. Albert Evans of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiated at Harriet's funeral. She had been a member of that church for many years.

"Ben's father was Abram Coke, 'Jr." That's why he went as Ben. I put 'Jr.' in quotes because my great-grandfather was born Abram McCarty, named after his uncle Abram Cole ('Sr.') When Abram Jr.'s parents both died he was adopted by his uncle and aunt and they changed his name to Cole and made him 'junior.'
